Jonathan was born in Cabarrus County, NC, on 11 Sept 1853, the seventh of eight children born to Calvin Page and Piety Lambert. "He had very limited education, but could read and write. Though never a church member, he occasionally visited in the Primitive Baptist Church. He was slight of build, about 5'8'' in height and wore a very long beard." [MFP]

Margaret (Maggie) Shaver, whom Jonathan married on 24 Dec 1874, was from the Richfield area of Stanly County. A piece of land Maggie inherited from her father was sold to buy a mule, and all their lives Jonathan and Maggie lived on tenant farms. After living on two different farms near Mt Pleasant, they moved to a farm near Lambert in Stanly County. In 1898 they moved again to the "Miss Allmon Place" in the same area. Here their last child, Adam, was born.

They moved again in 1904, to the "Whitt Page Place" near Herrin's Grove Primitive Baptist Church. The "Tucker Place" near Red Cross became their home in 1919, and 1920 found them moving to the "Chan Hatley Place" which was owned by their son-in-law, Luther Hatley. Here Maggie died of a stroke in June 1927. The youngest child, Adam, was married in August, and Jonathan moved with Adam and Esca to Albemarle. By 1930 Jonathan was back in the country with Adam's family at the "Bud Page Place" near Five Point. Here he came down with pneumonia and died on 30 Jan 1930. On a cold day with very deep snow Jonathan was buried at Herrin's Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
