GRANITE QUARRY -- Harold Elwood Sledge, 81, Granite Quarry, died Sunday (March 16, 2003) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.
Born July 22, 1921, in Rowan County, Mr. Sledge was a son of the late C.P. and Nancy Koontz Sledge. He was educated in Lexington schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He retired from Babcock/Wilcox Construction Co. as a boilermaker. He then worked for Rives Motor Co.
He was a member of Community Baptist Church, Spencer Masonic Lodge 543 and Local Boilermakers 30 and received a 52-year membership in the Oasis Shrine Club.
His first wife, Edna S. Sledge, died Feb. 10, 1997.
Survivors include wife Judy File Sledge, whom he married June 27, 1998; stepson Kenneth Ray Bostian Jr., Salisbury; stepdaughters Susan Hedrick, Salisbury, Connie Watson and Annette Fesperman, both of Rockwell, and Janet Poole, Gold Hill; brother Johnny Sledge, Lexington; and nine step-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Alan Hess. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
