Notes for Barbara “Darlene” Harrell
Darlene Harrell Thomas

Darlene Harrell Thomas, 73, of Rockwell, was born March 15, 1950, and passed on to be with Jesus in the early hours of Monday, January 29, 2024.

Darlene was a devoted and caring Kindergarten teacher at Morgan Elementary in Gold Hill, NC for 24 years. She was a 1968 graduate of East Rowan High School and a 1972 graduate of Pfeiffer College. Darlene was an accomplished organist, serving at Liberty United Methodist Church. She enjoyed music, especially the "oldies" from the 50's and 60's. Darlene enjoyed nature as well, everything from birds and flowers to collecting rocks. She was also fond of dogs and her dogs, Teddy and Ginger, were a source of comfort for her. Most of all, she was an amazing wife to her husband, Martin, and mother to their three children: Kristen, Keith, and Eric. She always put their needs before her own and will always be remembered for her love and dedication to them.

She is preceded in death by her parents, the late Robert Fincher Harrell and Edna Jane Stokes Harrell. However, Darlene left behind her only brother, Robert F. "Robbie" Harrell, Jr., of Gold Hill, NC.

Darlene is survived by her husband, Martin, who had lovingly cared for her for the past 25 years, after a major stroke left her permanently cognitively disabled. He was by her side and took care of her until the end of her life. She also left behind her three adult children: Kristen (Sean) Rinehart of Lakeview, MI, Keith (Kellie) Thomas of Leland, NC, and Eric (Maggie) Thomas of Mt. Holly, NC.

Four grandchildren called Darlene "Nana": Kristen and Sean's children: Averie (9) and Callie (6) and Eric and Maggie's children: Oliver (3) and Charlotte (1). Nana loved being around her grandchildren, always laughing and smiling when they were near.

At this time, there will not be a visitation or service, per the family's wishes.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in her honor to Liberty United Methodist Church, Gold Hill, NC.

Darlene was loved by all and will be missed by many, but her family takes comfort in knowing she is in heaven, and they will be reunited with her one day.

Powles Staton Funeral Home is assisting the family.
