Robert Fincher Harrell Sr.

Robert Fincher Harrell Sr., 94, of Gold Hill passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. Robert was born September 10, 1921 in Bryson City, NC. He was the son of the late Walter Harrell and Mabel H. Lunsford.

Robert was educated in the Bumcombe County school system and graduated from Emma High School, he also attended Western Carolina University. Robert entered the United States Marine Corp in 1942 and saw military action in the Pacific Theater at Iwo Jima and Japan.

After active duty with the Marines, Robert was self employed as a Plumbing Contractor working until 2008. He was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church and was a former Trustee of the church as well. Robert enjoyed farming and raising cattle on his farm as well as playing golf and was a member of the Golf Association of Rowan Seniors. More than anything though, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Keefer of Daytona Beach, FL, Beverly Jones, and Francine Bartlett of Asheville, NC.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Stokes Harrell who he married on March 12, 1949; a daughter, Darlene H. Thomas and husband Martin of Rockwell; and a son, Robert F. Harrell Jr. of Gold Hill.

He was blessed with 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, all who he loved; Kristen Rinehart, Eric Thomas, Keith Thomas, and Averie Rinehart.

A Graveside Service will be held on Monday September 21, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Salisbury National Cemetery on Statesville Blvd., conducted by Pastor Charlie Curtis of Liberty United Methodist Church.
Military honors will be provided by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the North Carolina National Guard.
