Notes for Robert Franklin “Bob” Ribelin
Robert "Bob" Franklin Ribelin

Robert "Bob" Franklin Ribelin, 77, died in Sun City, Fla., at Inspire Living with his wife by his side on Jan. 27, 2018, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was born in Albemarle, Stanly County, N.C. Bob moved to Anchorage, Alaska, with his father, Lee Ribelin and stepmother, Mary Ribelin, along with his brothers, James "Jim" Ribelin and Donald "Don" Ribelin. He attended Anchorage High School and worked at "C" Street Foodland as a night stocker.

After high school, Bob entered the United States Navy on Aug. 31, 1961, and remained on active duty until August 1965. He received an honorable discharge as an E-5 Petty Officer 2nd class majoring in computers. While in the service, Bob married Nadera Martin from Anchorage and had two daughters: Deborah and Susan. After his Navy discharge, the family returned to Anchorage, where he managed the Turnagain Arm Boarding Kennel in South Anchorage, finding his love for German Shepherds. At this time, he also started his long career in insurance by working for Larry Martin of Martin Insurance. In 1969, Bob met and married Teralyn "Terry" Warrick, whom he met through Congressman Howard W. Pollock. Bob and Terry's first son, Daniel, "Dan," was born in 1971, followed by their second son, Douglas, "Doug," in 1975.

In the early '70s, Bob went to work for Clary Insurance; in 1977, Bob started Ribelin Insurance Agency Inc., first located on Cordova Street in Anchorage. Bob worked independently until he formed a partnership with Richard L. Lowell, which then became Ribelin Lowell Ins Brokers, Inc. in 1985. This firm tripled in size becoming one of the largest insurance agencies in Alaska. Bob also served as a Board Member of the Alaska Food Bank. Bob retired from Ribelin Lowell in 1996. In 2003, Bob and Terry purchased a new home in over-55 community of Mt. Rose Estates in Palmer, Alaska. Bob and Terry were married 48 years.

Bob loved to hunt, fish, snowmachine and spend time at his cabin on Rainbow Lake with family and friends. Bob also loved building cars, trailers and boats. The garage was his favorite place to be and where he perfected his hobby/skill of welding. In retirement years, he developed a love of golf and managed to perfect his score to a 10 handicap. His best memory of his golfing years was his trip to Scotland where he played a game on St. Andrews Links Course, also known as the birthplace of golf.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Teralyn Ribelin; sons, Daniel Ribelin and Douglas Ribelin; granddaughter, Taylor Ribelin; Sean Johnson, a young man Bob took under his wing and loved as family; daughter, Deborah Bitney, husband John, and grandson, Joshua Richter all of Alaska; and predeceased by daughter, Susan Ribelin of Hawaii. Bob was also survived by two brothers, James Ribelin and Donald Ribelin; godchildren, Stephen Tucker, Wendy Tucker (husband John Lewis), Lisa Sindorf (Scott Egbert) and predeceased by great-godson Devon Tucker; and survived by best friends, Earl and Judy Tucker, all of Alaska; along with many other cousins and extended family members.

Bob will be remembered by many of his long-term clients and associates, as well as members of the Mt. Rose Community with many friendships in both Alaska and Florida. Bob's nurses and caregivers at Inspire always commented and loved his beautiful smile and bright and shining blue eyes.

To honor Bob, contributions can be made to: Alzheimer's Resource of Alaska, 1750 Abbott Road, Anchorage, AK.
