Kay Lowder

Kay William Lowder, 78, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, June 21, 2017, following a period of declining health.

A celebration of Kay’s life will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 24, at his church, St. John’s Lutheran in Concord, with the Rev. Dr. Mark Ericson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Lowder family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. at the church.

Kay was a Cabarrus County native, born Jan. 18, 1939, to Homer and Cora Lee Wyatt Lowder. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Gwynn L. Hahn, who passed away in February.

A career truck driver, Kay began his driving days with Akers Truck Lines and retired from behind the wheel with Philip Morris. He enjoyed farming family land and was a life-long train and railroad enthusiast. He was an active member of the Carolina Clinchfield Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society and was a past volunteer with the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer.

Kay is survived by two daughters, Tammy Maroukis and friend, Andy Morris, and Anita Maddaluna and husband, Dave; six grandchildren, Brianna Maroukis, Spencer Maroukis, Corey Huneycutt and wife, Christina, Lindsey Huneycutt, Morgan Maddaluna and Kendall Maddaluna; and his brother-in-law, Cletus Hahn.

Contributions in Kay’s memory may be directed to the Carolina Clinchfield Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society, Bostic, NC.
