Arie Gustus Swinson

ROCKWELL - Arie Gustus Swinson, 91, of Rockwell, passed away Feb. 4, 2010, at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Mr. Swinson was born July 26, 1918, in Cabarrus County, son of the late Jacob Grover Cleveland Swinson and Mary Ann Shinn Swinson.

Arie was educated at Kluttz School and Rowan County schools, was a member of West Park Baptist Church, Rockwell, and had worked for Cannon Mills. He retired from sawmilling.

As he was known, "Mr. Swinson the Peddler" loved gardening and gave vegetables to people all over the area. He was "a Very Giving Person."

In addition to his parents, Arie was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Novella Swinson; an infant son, Gary Wayne Swinson; wife Mae Belle Hipp Swinson, on Sept. 12, 2007; brothers Clarence Charles "Charlie" Swinson, George W. Swinson, Roy Swinson; half brother Harvey Kluttz; and sisters Ethel Sides, Louise Drye, Maggie Swinson.

Survivors include sons Robert Lee "Bill" Swinson and wife Robin of Butler, Tenn., Larry Thomas Swinson and wife Donna of Rockwell; daughters Mrs. Betty Hill and husband Howard of Rockwell, Mrs. Edith Dorton and husband James of Rockwell, Ms. Joyce Swinson of Rockwell, Mrs. Vickie Haynes and husband Bobby of Salisbury.

Twelve grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Visitation: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday at Powles Funeral Home; and the remainder of the time, at the home of a daughter, Ms. Joyce Swinson of Rockwell.

Funeral: The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Powles Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Charles Carver, pastor of West Park Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Brookhill Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
