SALISBURY - Tony Ray Brown, 66, of Salisbury, passed away Wednesday Jan. 13, 2010, at his residence.

Mr. Brown was born Aug. 18, 1943, a son of Gladys Geneva "Sis" Kepley Brown and the late Carl James "Rink" Brown. Tony was a 1961 graduate of East Rowan High School, earned a Business Degree at Wingate College and attended Catawba College.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury, where he was a Deacon, Trustee for over 30 years and Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee. Tony helped to form the Missions Committee at First Baptist Church and went to South America to do mission work after the committee was formed.

Tony was a present member of the Planning Board of Granite Quarry. He served on the Board of Managers of the Saleeby Fisher YMCA. He received the Historic Preservation Award from the Historic Salisbury Foundation for his work on the Cheney House. He was also the recipient of the Republican Businessman Recognition Award.

When Tony was the general contractor for Habitat for Humanity, he constructed the only home built in one week in Salisbury. He was also the general contractor for the Safe House in Lake Placid, N.Y., which was used during the 1980 Winter Olympics.

Tony was owner of Brown Investments and a general contractor. He developed several residential neighborhoods including Greystone, Timber Creek, Forest Ridge and Riverwood and was proud to contribute to the development of his community.

In addition to his mother, Tony is survived by his wife, Connie Yost Brown, whom he married June 20, 1965; daughter Ashlee Claud and husband Greg and children Braydon and Lauren of Roanoke, Va.; son Ryan Brown and wife Christy and son Daegan of Cary; and sisters Nadine "Deanie" Jones of Faith and Donna Hooks and husband Bobby of Salisbury.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Salisbury Friday, Jan. 15 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Services: The funeral service will be held Saturday Jan. 16 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Salisbury conducted by Dr. Kenneth Lance, pastor, and former pastors Rev. Steve Ackerman and Rev. Fenton Moorhead.
