Virginia Peeler Holshouser

ROCKWELL - Virginia Peeler Holshouser, 86, of Rockwell, passed away on Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Mrs. Holshouser was born on April 18, 1925, in Rowan County, daughter of the late Clarence W. and Dora Lyerly Peeler. She was a 1943 graduate of Granite Quarry High School and a 1944 graduate of Salisbury Business College.

She was a secretary/bookkeeper, working as a legal secretary for Jimmy Hudson from 1944-1952 and for Rockwell Casket Co. from 1952-1972. She retired in 1983 as District 3 Secretary for the N.C. State Highway Patrol, Salisbury.

Virginia loved making quilts, crocheting, tending flowers and gardening as long as her health permitted.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, James Lee Holshouser, on Dec. 16, 2007; three brothers, Bernard, Cecil and Bill Peeler; and three sisters, Kathaleen Lanning, Jeanette Crook and Phyllis Collins.

Mrs. Holshouser attended St. Luke's Reformed Church and was a lifelong member, active in all phases of church activities. She was a member of the Senior Choir, Brownie Fisher Sunday School Class, Memorial Fund Secretary and Treasurer for 26 years and Reserved Fund Treasurer for a number of years. She was made a life-member of St. Luke's Women's Fellowship in 1986.

Mrs. Holshouser was also a member of Lower Stone Luncheon Club and Powles TLC Club.

Mrs. Holshouser is survived by a son, Dennis Lee Holshouser and wife Connie of Rockwell; one grandson, Travis Holshouser and wife Karla of Raleigh; one granddaughter, Amy Holshouser Powell and husband Shawn of Concord; six great-grandchildren, Anna Scott, Baxley and Emerson Holshouser of Raleigh, Gavin, Ella Kate and Parker Powell of Concord; a brother, Arnold Peeler of Rockwell; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Lassiter of Linwood and Mrs. Jean Shuping of Rockwell; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Service: Services will be held on Sunday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's Reformed Church in Salisbury, conducted by Rev. Johnny Boggs, pastor. Burial will follow at Brookhill Memorial Gardens in Rockwell.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at St. Luke's Reformed Church on Sunday, March 25 and at the residence the remainder of the time.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke's Reformed Church, Music Fund.

Powles Funeral Home is assisting the Holshouser family.
