Van Buren "Bee" Brown

FAITH - Van Buren "Bee" Brown, 92, of Faith, passed away on Monday, Nov. 24, at the N.C. State Veterans Home in Salisbury.

Mr. Brown was born on Oct. 8, 1916, in Rowan County, son of the late George Albert and Basha Foil Brown. Mr. Brown was educated at Faith School. He served in the US Army Air Corp from 1943-1946, stationed near London, England. While in the service, Mr. Brown was a munitions worker preparing and loading bombs on planes. In the service, Mr. Brown earned the EAME Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. Prior to his service with the Air Corp, he worked in quarrying and quarry acquisition with his father. He also worked with stone in Philadelphia. After the service, Mr. Brown worked at Cannon Mills Plant # 1 for 40 years as a foreman and supervisor.

Mr. Brown was a charter member of the Faith American Legion and Faith Fire Department. He coached the Faith baseball team and a Yadkin Valley League team in the early 1950's. Mr. Brown was an active member of Shiloh Reformed Church where he formerly served as President of the Consistory and Trustee, President of the Churchmen's Fellowship, Sunday school teacher; Evangelism Committee, and Youth Fellowship Advisor.

Mr. Brown was active in the Faith Fourth of July Celebration from its conception. He helped to build Post 327 Legion building and served as head cook for the fourth Sunday meals at the Legion building to help finance it. He is a past member of the Faith Elementary and East Rowan High School Advisory Boards. He was well known for his gardening and work outdoors, and always whistled while he worked. Mr. Brown was awarded Faith Civitan "Senior Citizen of the Year Award" in 2005.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucille Peeler Brown, on September 25, 2003; his son Van Lane Brown (1960); brothers: Grover Brown, Weldon "Enie" Brown, George A. Brown, and Bill Brown; and sisters: Flora B. Bame, Inna B. Wilhelm, Evelyn B. Deal, Clarice Brown, and Naomi B. Hoke.

Survivors include his daughter Susan Brown Cannon and husband, George, of Faith; two granddaughters: Erin C. Kelly and husband, Michael, of Concord, and Ashleigh C. Bowling and husband, Bradley, of Cary; four great grandsons: Braeden Bowling, Carson Kelly, Parker Kelly, and William Kelly; and one great granddaughter: Banks Bowling. He is also survived by his brother, Roy Brown of Faith, and sisters, Margaret B. Mills of Salisbury, and Voneva B. Brinkley and husband, Bill, of Granite Quarry.

How do you put into words what a hard working, patient, loyal, and God fearing man means to his beloved Faith community? He radiated his love for God and his fellow man.

Services: The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 26, at 11:00 am at Shiloh Reformed Church of Faith, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Trexler, Interim Pastor. Faith American Legion will be seated as a group during the funeral. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the N.C. Army National Guard.

Visitation: The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 25, at Powles Funeral Home from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Memorials: Memorials may be made to the Van B. and Lucille P. Brown Scholarship Fund, c/o Shiloh Reformed Church, Faith, NC.
