Joseph Calvin Arey, Jr.

SALISBURY - Joseph "J.C." Calvin Arey, Jr., 88, of Salisbury, passed away on March 8, 2011, at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Salisbury.

Mr. Arey was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Rowan County, son of the late Joseph Calvin Arey, Sr. and Emma Eagle Arey. A 1942 graduate of Rockwell High School, he was the owner-operator of J.C. Arey Stone Works, where he followed in his fathers footsteps and was a master stone mason.

Mr. Arey served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Following his military service, he was a mechanic for Spencer Shops.

He was a member of Salisbury Christian Fellowship, Faith American Legion, Woodman of the World; and he attended the Senior Citizens Meal Site at Granite Quarry.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Kepley Arey, on Feb. 25, 2007; brother Melvin Arey; and sister Lorraine Arey Boger.

Mr. Arey is survived by sons Joe Arey and wife Pam of Salisbury, Tim Arey and wife Aimee of Salisbury; daughter Sally Arey Bame of Salisbury; grandchildren Andy Bame and wife Megan, Amanda Bame Savage and husband Scott, Hannah Arey Regalado and husband Jose, Seth Arey and wife Sara Ann; great-grandchildren Emma Rose Savage and Luke Bame; and brother Robert Arey of Salisbury

Service: The funeral is at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 11 at Salisbury Christian Fellowship conducted by Rev. Stan Welch and Rev. Scott Savage. Mr. Arey will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The burial will follow at Faith Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the NC National Guard.

Visitation: The family will receive friends Thursday, March 10 at Powles Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.
