Notes for Sterling Price Eagle
Death Comes To Mr. S. P. Eagle

Funeral Services Thursday Morning From The Residence on South Race Street

Deceased Was a Good Man and Cherished a Good Name

Mr. S. P. Eagle, member of the firm of the Eagle Marble and Granite Company, of Statesville, died Tuesday night at 11:25 o'clock, at the Davis Hospital. He underwent an operation for acute appendicitis last Friday, the appendix having ruptured, and his condition from the beginning was regarded as serious. He became worse Tuesday evening and the immediate cause of his death was due to acute dilation of the heart. His death was unexpected and comes as a distinct shock to the people of this community. Mr. Eagle was 72 years of age.

Sterling Price Eagle was born in the state of Missouri, September 10, 1861. He was the son of Daniel A. and Martha Weems Eagle. His father died in Missouri (a Confederate soldier) and soon afterward his mother returned to Iredell county, when he was 12 years of age, living in Chambersburg township, the Oak Forest community, where Mr. Eagle spent his boyhood and young manhood, until after his marriage.

Mr. Eagle and Miss Edith Watt, of Cool Spring township were united in marriage December 19, 1895. There were two children born to Mr. and Mrs. Eagle. One survives, Dr. Watt W. Eagle, who is an ear, nose and throat specialist, in the Duke University, Durham. The other son, Dr. Daniel Eugene Eagle, died at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, just as he was finishing his internship and ready to begin his chosen life's work, in the medical profession.

Mr. and Mrs. Ealge had been living in Statesville for nearly 34 years, removing here from the Oak Forest community in December, 1899. For a while after becoming a resident of Statesville, Mr. Eagle was engaged in carpentry; later, he was in the dry goods business, associated with the local mercantile establishment of Knox and Poston. In the year 1908, he and Mr. James L. Milholland bought the grocery business of J. C. Turner, and he was actively in the grocery line for 20 years, selling his interest in 1928 when he bought J. A. Conner's interest in the local marble firm of Barron and Conner. Becoming associated with his cousin, Mr. George Eagle, the two formed partnership which has been known since 1928 as the Eagle Marble and Granite Company. Mr. Eagle was actively connected with the business on Cooper street until his last illness, which came less than a week before his death.

"Mr. Eagle was a good man--he was a man of unimpeachable character," is the sentiment expressed today by citizens of Statesville and Iredell who have known Mr. Eagle for more than half a century. He was modest and unassuming, but possessed of a good name, which, according to Biblical authority, is of more value "than great riches."

For more than three decades Mr. Eagle had been a faithful member of the First Presbyterian church, Statesville. He also held member ship in the Junior Order and the local council of the Royal Arcanum.

Besides his widow and only son, Mr. Eagle is survived by Mr. George W. Dotson, a half-brother, and Mrs. H. T. Steele, a half-sister, both of Statesville; Mrs. Emmett Morrison , a half-sister, of Norfolk, Va.; Mrs. Robert Gaither of Harmony, a step-sister; and Mr. T. J. Dotson, a step-brother, of Winston-Salem.

The funeral was held Thursday at 11 o'clock, a. m., from the residence on South Race street. Dr. C. E. Raynal, pastor of First Presbyterian church, was assisted in the service by Dr. J. H. Pressly, pastor of the First A. R. P. church. Interment followed in Oakwood cemetery.

The active pall bearers were Messrs. Fred H. Deaton, J. F. Scroggs, J. R. Rives, Marvin Lackey, Eugene Crawford and John L. Milholland. The honorary pall bearers were Messrs. C. E. Mills, C. L. Murdock, N. W. Johnson, J. S. Alexander, F. W. Lentz, J. L. Sloan, F. A. Sherrill, N. B. Mills, H. O. Steele, T. L. Adams, W. B. Crawford and J. A. Vaughn.

Miss Emma Lewis and Miss Annie Aderholt were in charge of the floral offerings, assisted by a large number of friends.

Among the out-of-town relatives and friends here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Eagle, Dr. James Eagle, Miss Alta Eagle, and Mrs. Deems Wingate, all of Spencer; Rev. and Mrs. John Foster of Cooleemee; Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Somers, Mrs. Tom Watt, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Myers and Mr. R. A. Miller, of Stony Point; Mrs. Nettie Smoot and Miss Neely Smoot, of Mooresville; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Eagle, of New Bern; Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Bell and Mrs. D. M. Honeycutt, of Oak Forest; Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Crawford, Mr. Eugene Crawford and Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Adams, of Dunlap: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Webb, of Cool Spring; Mrs. E. N. Morrison, of Catawba, Va.; and Mr. R. F. Gaither and family, of Harmony.
