The records disagree concerning John Kirk's wife and children.

Winnie Lentz Ingram Richter, citing David Kirk Shaver as a source, gives Sarah Steele as wife (date of birth and death unknown, from Mecklenburg County at the time of marriage) and says that John and Sarah had 9 children.

Jean Kirk Ramsey, also citing David Kirk Shaver as a source, says John's wife was named Mary, maiden name unknown, that she died 9 June 1828 in Montgomery (now Stanly) County, and that John and Mary had 13 children.

WLI Richter names 9 children, and all nine are included in the 13 given by JK Ramsey. Missing from Richter's list are Rebecca, Pauline, James, and John.

Ramsey records that Thomas Martin Kirk died at age 16 on 19 Nov 1814 while Richter says that he lived from 1791 to 1840, married Catherine Betty Hunsucker, and fathered 8 children.

Ramsey is descended from John Kirk through his son Stephen, and she states that Stephen recorded in his family Bible birth, death, and marriage dates for his brothers, sisters, and children.
