Notes for John L. Kirk
John Kirk was born about 1745 in Ireland of Scotch ancestry. He died about 1815 in what is now Stanly County, NC. [source: the late David Kirk Shaver who resided on Morrow Mountain Road, Stanly County, NC]

John Kirk is not in either the 1779 or 1780 Montgomery County Tax List. The only Kirk in those lists is George Kirk.

John Kirk served in the Revolutionary War from 1777 to 1780. He enlisted 19 May 1777 in the 4th Regiment which was consolidated into the 1st Regiment on 3 Feb 1778. Land Grants from the state were given to John Kirk of Montgomery County for service in the Continental Army.

John Kirk is head of household in the 1810 Montgomery County Census.

In 1820 the heirs of John Kirk petitioned the NC courts for a division of his land between 11 surviving children. Thomas Martin and Elizabeth were no longer living. [This account is given by Jean Kirk Ramsey, citing David Kirk Shaver as a source. Winnie Lentz Ingram Richter, also citing David Kirk Shaver as a source, gives a different account concerning the wife of John Kirk as well as the life of Thomas Martin Kirk.]

In addition to his considerable Land Grants, John Kirk purchased from Henry Mounger his ferry property. The ferry was known as Tindal's Ferry in 1765, becoming Mounger's Ferry and then Kirk Ferry. It was located on the Pee Dee River just below the junction of the Yadkin and Uwharrie Rivers. John Kirk purchased enough land east of the river for a landing area and operated the ferry until his death. Alexander C. Kirk inherited the Ferry Tract in the division of John Kirk's lands, and about 1830 sold it to his brother, George Kirk.
