Herman Alexander Ribelin

The funeral will be Friday for Herman Alexander Ribelin, 74, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (March 27, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center from an apparent heart attack.

Born May 8, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Ribelin, a son of the late N.O. and Mary Geneva Heilig Ribelin, was a graduate of Granite Quarry High School. He attended Catawba College and North Carolina State University, Raleigh.

He received a Purple Heart for his service with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was vice president of Carolina Maid Products Inc.

He was a member of Morgan School PTA, East Rowan PTA and Liberty Volunteer Fire Department, where he held numerous offices.

A member of Liberty United Methodist Church, he served on various committees. He was a member of Miller-Russell American Legion Post 112 and Rockwell Senior Citizens. Also a commissioner in the Central North Carolina Council of Boy Scouts of America, he was a past recipient of the Silver Beaver.

His wife, Billie Mae Morgan Ribelin, died Nov. 13, 1991.

Survivors include wife Edith Bost Ribelin, whom he married May 27, 1995; sons Norman G. and Kyle M. Ribelin, both of Salisbury; daughter Connie R. Jenkins, Burke, Va.; stepson John H. Kriminger, Salisbury; stepdaughter Kim K. Hicks, Salisbury; brothers Charles L. Ribelin, Arden, Nate O. Ribelin, Alpharetta,Ga., and Franklin R. Ribelin, Sparks, Nev.; sisters Evelyn E. Ribelin, Salisbury, and Eleanor R. Sifford, Taylors, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 4 p.m. Friday, Liberty United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mark Helms, pastor, and the Rev. Kevin Gilliam, pastor, Grace Lowerstone United Church of Christ. The body will be cremated and the remains buried in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-7:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Billie and Herman lived in Liberty across Liberty-Gold Hill Road from the homeplace of C. G. Frick, and separated from the road by C. G.'s peach orchard. The land the orchard was on was later purchased by Herman from the heirs of Mary C. Eagle Frick. It had passed to them at her death in 1929.

After retirement, Herman bought and restored the Joseph Eagle house (see note for Joseph Eagle) where Billie had grown up.
