Claude Monroe Herrin
Claude Monroe Herrin of Stanly Manor Nursing Home, formerly of 17923 Page Road, Mt. Pleasant, went home to be with his Lord Feb. 11, 2010, at the age of 94.
He was born Jan. 1, 1916, in Stanly County, the son of the late James Frank Herrin and Sarah Page Herrin. He was first married to the late Bertha Gheen Herrin until her death in 1988, and second to the late Rachel Blackwelder Fisher Herrin until her death in 2003. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Floyd A. Herrin and sisters, Cloral Herrin Tucker, Cora Bell Herrin Eudy and Ola Mae Herrin Smith Hinson. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Margie Herrin Hatley; two granddaughters, Shelia Herrin Eudy and Tammy Herrin Belk; infant granddaughter, Angela Dawn Herrin; and a stepdaughter, Becky Fisher Morton.
He is survived by two sons, Jimmy Ray Herrin and wife Marion of Locust, and Eugene J. Herrin and wife Doris of Oakboro; a son-in-law, Ervin Hatley of Stanfield; three stepdaughters, Diane Fisher of Charlotte, Janice Carpenter and Betty Rose Harris, both of New London; three stepsons, David Lee Fisher of Midland, Grady Dennis Fisher of Concord and Melvin Gene Fisher of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren, Kathy Herrin Leigh, Vickie Herrin Smith, Sherrie Wood, Tonia Braswell, Debra Herrin Honeycutt, Timothy Herrin, Renee Herrin Rogers, Gary Hatley, Ronnie Hatley, Teresa Hatley Love and Donnie Hatley. He has 30 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Herrin farmed and worked in the cotton mill until retiring from American Efird Mills. He will always be remembered by his family and friends for the loving care he provided his wife, Bertha, who was stricken with crippling rheumatoid arthritis. He took early retirement to care for her, learned to cook and do housework, and tirelessly attended to her every need. He will also be remembered for his love of singing and being the inspiration for his grandchildren, "The Hatley Family Band." Even during his last days, he could be heard singing old gospel songs such as, "Amazing Grace" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and was often heard quoting The Bible. He had a great love for other people and one of his favorite sayings was one he had heard his father quote many times, "If you want to have friends, you have to be a friend yourself."
Mr. Herrin was a past member and deacon of Herrin's Grove Primitive Baptist Church. He worked many long, hard hours helping build the present building at Herrin's Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
The family will be at the home of his son, Jimmy Ray Herrin, at 220 Lagoda Drive, Locust.
Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel, with Elder Rom Kerley officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Herrin's Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.
The family would like to thank the staff of Stanly Manor Nursing Home for their love, kindness and gentle care shown to our loved one during his stay there.
