Ernest was raised by his grandfather, Peter Long. They farmed the bottom land of the Yadkin River and Town Creek, now part of High Rock Lake.
After their marriage, Ernest and Lillian moved to Spencer where he worked as a carpenter for Southern Railroad. He was promoted to building the cabs for the steam locomotives. He bought a small farm on Long's Ferry Road where it now crosses I-85.
