Barbara Carter Luther

LANDIS - Barbara Carter Luther, 70, a resident of Autumn Care of Salisbury and formerly of Landis, died at the nursing home Monday, Jan. 26, 2009.

Born July 1, 1938, in Cabarrus County, she was daughter of the late George Issac and Nellie Sifford Carter. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Barbara was an active member of South China Grove Baptist Church until the onset of her illness. She was a 1956 graduate of China Grove High School and was employed as a medical secretary for various doctors. Barbara was a multi-talented person. She enjoyed womens softball and played in city leagues wherever her husband was stationed with the US Navy, including some WAVES service teams. An avid gardener, she also enjoyed basketry, crocheting and sewing.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include husband Ralph Luther, whom she married March 18, 1956; son Scott Luther of China Grove; daughter Trina Wertz (Wesley) of Salisbury; brothers "Pete" Carter (Faye), Bill Carter (Jean), Hoy Carter (Faye), all of Salisbury, Mayford Carter and Charles Carter (Betty) of Faith; grandchildren Christopher Hamilton (Elizabeth) of Landis and John Hamilton (Amy) of Jacksonville, Fla.; and great-grandchild Autumn Hamilton of Landis.

Service: 1 p.m. Thursday at South China Grove Baptist church conducted by Rev. Shane Utley. A private inurnment will be held at a later date at the National Cemetery.

Visitation: Following the service in the Family Life Center. The remainder of the time, the family will be at the home.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to South China Grove Baptist Church, P.O. Box 163, China Grove, NC.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge of arrangements.
