Charles Cecil “Major” Carter

FAITH - Charles Cecil "Major" Carter, 78, of Faith, passed away Jan. 26, 2010, at the Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Major was born Jan. 2, 1932, in Cabarrus County, son of the late George Isaac Carter and Nellie Sifford Carter. He attended Mount Pleasant High School and graduated from China Grove High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in the Korean War.

Mr. Carter was a brick mason, stone mason and carpenter. He loved fishing at Carolina Beach. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he was an usher, member of the property committee, on church council, long-range planning and building committee, and helped in any projects the church needed help with.

Major was a member of Faith American Legion Post, was past Commander and a member of the 40/8 Voiture Nationale.

He was active in the Faith 4th of July Celebration, being co-chairman of the Beauty Queen Committee. He was a former Jaycee, where he received the Distinguished Service Award, including outstanding community service and senior citizens award.

Mr. Carter helped with Meals on Wheels, Relay For Life and anything he could do to help people and his community. He was a former member of Faith Volunteer Fire Dept. and was former mayor of Faith.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty Frick Carter, whom he married Aug. 31, 1958. He has two daughters, Mrs. Lisa Carter Phelps and husband Rex and Mrs. Karen Carter Fink and husband Todd of Faith. Four surviving brothers are Mayford Carter of Rockwell, L.M. "Pete" Carter of China Grove, and Hoy Carter and Billy Carter of Salisbury. Grandchildren are Nicholas Phelps and wife Jayme, Tiffani Phelps and fiance Adam Burney and Enzley Fink and fiance Walter Recinos. He also had a great-grandson, Mason Phelps.

Service: The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church conducted by the Rev. Clarence Sifford, pastor, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the Church Family Life Center from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday prior to the service, and at the residence the remainder of the time. Special seating will be reserved for Faith Volunteer Firemen and Faith American Legion.
