Sunday, March 2, 2008 — James Glenn Whitley 81, of 20221 Ridgecrest Road, Oakboro, died at 10:10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, in CMC NorthEast.

His funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday with a 30-minute state in Red Cross Baptist Church, where he was a member. The Rev. Garry Baker will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Born Sept. 24, 1926, in Stanly County, he was a son of the late James Claude and Beulah Little Whitley and was retired from Cannon Mills in Concord after 35 years of service. He served in the Navy during World War II.

Glenn was very active through the years in Red Cross Baptist Church. He served as treasurer, worked with youth groups, and served on the cemetery committee as well as many other roles. He was also instrumental in forming Ridgecrest Volunteer Fire Department in the 1960s and started the Little League Baseball Team at Ridgecrest. His passions included riding his motorcycle, traveling with his wife, and raising cattle.

A sister, Edith W. Hatley, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Edith H. Whitley of the home; three sons, Chris Whitley and wife, Barbara, of Albemarle, Les Whitley and wife, Teresa, of Oakboro, and Eric Whitley and friend, Elizabeth Brislin, of Mt. Holly; two brothers, Coy Whitley of Albemarle and Charles Grady Whitley of Charlotte; nine grandchildren, Abby Whitley of Charlotte, Trent Whitley of Mt. Holly, Josh Whitley of Oakboro, Matt Whitley of Mt. Holly, Alex Whitley of Asheville, Bethany Whitley of Mt. Holly, Phillip Birmingham of Midland; Jennifer Richter of Oakland, Calif., and Catherine Hinson of Albemarle; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jim Richter.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the many medical and support staff members of Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast for their kindness and caring during this difficult period in our lives.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Red Cross Baptist Church. At other times they will meet at his home.

Memorials may be made to Red Cross Baptist Church, or NorthEast Foundation at Carolinas Medical Center/ NorthEast.
