Verna M. Powlas

ROCKWELL - Mrs. Verna M. Powlas, 92, of Highway 52, passed away Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at her residence.

Mrs. Powlas was born Sept. 20, 1919, in Rowan County, the daughter of the late Mary Louanna Edwards and Samuel C. Edwards. She was married to Richard Ralph Powlas in 1938. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Ralph J. Rainey and Harry B. Edwards; and a great-grandchild, Samuel Powlas.

Mrs. Powlas was a member of Rockwell United Methodist Church, the Golden Rule Sunday School Class and UMW. A member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 112, she served on the board for Meals on Wheels.

A cosmetologist, she owned Verna's Beauty Shop. She was also a certified nursing assistant and retired from W.G. Bill Hefner VA Medical Center. She enjoyed traveling.

Those left to cherish her memory are sons Richard R. Powlas, Jr. and wife Nancy of Little Mountain, S.C., Thomas C. Powlas and wife Nancy Jo, of Dickson, Tenn.; daughter Mary Anne Peeler of Rockwell; 10 grandchildren, Ashley Peeler and husband Walter DeWeerdt of Brussels, Belgium, Lacey Nelson and husband Bradley of Fort Levinworth, Kan., Jay Powlas and wife Penny of Dickson, Tenn., Todd Powlas and wife Penny of Dickson, Tenn., Laura Baumiller and husband Robert of Coral Springs, Fla., Nicholas Powlas and wife Pam of Chapin, S.C., Alex Powlas of Chapin, S.C., Richard R. Powlas III of Chapin, S.C., Trina Millsaps and husband Jeff of Statesville and Angie Mathis of Franklin; 23 great- grandchildren, Tiffany Montgomery, Andrew Powlas, Grace Powlas, Rickey Powlas IV, Meghann Powlas, Griffin Powlas, Samantha Mann, Keith Mann, Chelsey Baumiller, Jade Baumiller, Laszlo DeWeerdt, Savannah Millsaps, Matthew Mathis, Rachel Mathis, Tibo Noel, Ben Powlas, Stella Nelson, Scarlett Nelson, Trey Simmons, Adam Powlas, Anna Powlas, Nicholas Powlas II and Nathan Powlas; and four great-great grandchildren, Alivia Hodges, Damien Montgomery II, Embry Deaton, Gabi Mann.

Service: Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 10) at Rockwell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Warren Miller officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Park across from Summersett Funeral Home in Salisbury.

Visitation: Visitation will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday (Dec. 9) at Summersett Funeral Home.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rockwell United Methodist Church, General Fund, or the charity of your choice.
