Gilbert Garfield "Gib" Russell

Gilbert Garfield "Gib" Russell , 92, of Salisbury, passed away Monday, June 26, 2017 at the Liberty Lane Hospice at the W. G. Bill Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury.

He was born June 16, 1925 in Granite Quarry, NC to the late Raymond and Viola Albright Russell. He attended Granite Quarry School. Mr. Russell worked for W.F. Brinkley and Son for many years before retiring from Rowan Business Forms in Salisbury.

He was a Member of Christiana Lutheran Church, Men in Mission, the Men's Bible Class, past Church Council Member, and served on the Boy Scout Troop 317 Committee.

Mr. Russell was a Charter Member of Boy Scout Troop 379 where he earned his Eagle Scout, and also served as an Assistant Scout Master. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, Costal Patrol Base 16 in Manteo, NC in 1943 before he enlisted in the United States Army. Mr. Russell is Veteran of the United States Army 88th Infantry Division, serving during WWII and the Korean War. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, and the Congressional Gold Medal.

Mr. Russell was a Member of the Hudson, Miller, Tatum VFW Post, a life member of the Rowan County DAV, and the Men's Breakfast Club at Rufty Homes Center.

Mr. Russell joined the Granite Quarry Fire Department in 1952, where he served as Chief from 1955-57 and as Deputy Chief from 1965-77.

Mr. Russell served on the Granite Lake Park Committee.

Mr. Russell was an avid woodworker, leather worker and worked in stained glass. He enjoyed fishing at the Outer Banks and listening to Blue Grass Music and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Russell was preceded in death by his wife of over 67 years, Madge Overman Brown Russell on September 9, 2013, and brother, Alton Russell on June 14, 1992.

Mr. Russell is survived by two daughters, Judy Stoner and husband Tommy of Spencer, and Patti R. Boles of Sylva; three grandsons, Todd Kirk and wife Kelly of Richfield, Clayton Kirk of Pensacola, FL, and Weston Boles of Charlotte; granddaughter, Maggie Petrea and husband Adam of Rockwell; two great-grandsons, Wyatt Kirk and Bennett Petrea; and two great-granddaughters, Cynthia Kirk and Kynley Petrea.

The family will greet friends and relatives on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Powles Staton Funeral Home, Rockwell, NC.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 29, 2017, in the Christiana Lutheran Church, with Rev.Don Safrit, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the North Carolina National Guard.

Memorials may be made to Brighten the Beacon Fund at Christiana Lutheran Church.
