Madge Russell

SALISBURY - Mrs. Madge Overman Brown Russell, 86, of Salisbury, passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury.

Mrs. Russell was born Jan. 25, 1927, in Rowan County, daughter of the late Clyde Roscoe Brown Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Overman Brown.

Mrs. Russell was a 1944 graduate of Granite Quarry High School and also graduated from Salisbury Business College. She retired in 1988 from Rowan County Register of Deeds.

She was a lifelong member of Christiana Lutheran Church, a member of Lutheran Church Women, a longtime youth advisor, past Sunday School teacher, member of the Peggy Boggs Sunday School Class.

She was active in the Legal Secretaries Club, Junior Women in Granite Quarry and worked with the Democratic Womens Association.

Mrs. Russell also worked on the Nathan Brown House Restoration Committee, was a member of the Ambassadors Club at Rufty-Holmes, enjoyed crocheting, sewing, needlework, gardening, flowers and enjoyed bowling. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Gilbert Russell.

She is survived by her husband, Gilbert "Gib" Garfield Russell, who she married Sept. 8, 1946; daughters Judy R. Stoner and husband Tommy of Spencer, Patti R. Boles of Salisbury; brother Clyde R. Brown Jr. and wife Ann of North Wilkesboro; sisters Mildred B. Brown of Salisbury, Louise B. Crowther of Granite Quarry; grandchildren Todd Kirk and wife Kelly of Richfield, Clayton Kirk of Pensacola, Fla., Weston Boles and wife Lydia of Charlotte, Maggie Petrea and husband Adam of Salisbury; and great-grandchildren Wyatt Kirk, Cynthia Kirk and Kynley Petrea.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at Powles Funeral Home on Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Service: The funeral service is Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. at Christiana Lutheran Church conducted by Rev. Carl Haynes, pastor with Rev. Don Safrit assisting. The burial will follow at Christiana Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Memorials: May be made to Christiana Lutheran Church, Roof Fund; or The Nathan Brown House.
