HOUSE FIRE CLAIMS MAN'S LIFE
By Jessie Burchette, Salisbury Post

An elderly Gold Hill man died early Saturday morning only a few feet from the door of his burning mobile home.

Gilmer Junior Morgan, 70, is believed to be the victim.

Neighbors repeatedly tried to get into the single-wide mobile home to get the man out but were turned back by flames.

Officials won't confirm the identity of the victim pending an autopsy and medical examiner's report.

However, Powles Funeral Home is working with Morgan's family for funeral arrangements. And Sgt. M.T. Agner of the Rowan Sheriff's Department, confirmed Morgan lived in the mobile home at 3460 Morgan Road, just off Stokes Ferry Road.

Liberty firefighters got the call at 4:36 a.m. Saturday. A man living nearby saw the flames and called 911.

"He tried everything he could to get inside the trailer, even after calling 911, but the fire was too intense," said Assistant Fire Marshal Eric Bonds referring to the neighbor.

The 12-foot by 57-foot trailer was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived.

After they were able to douse the blaze, firefighters found the badly burned body about 48 inches inside the front door, said Bonds. "He just about made it out," said Bonds.

The preliminary investigation indicates the fire was accidental.

Bonds said it appears an unattended pan was left on the kitchen stove.

Rowan Sheriff George Wilhelm and Detective Tonya Rusher were on the scene assisting with the investigation.

Bonds and Agner said confirmation of the identity will likely be made Monday through dental records.

They also cited a delay because several members of the family were at the beach. Other members of Morgan's family who live in the Liberty area gathered at the scene.

Both Bonds and Agner said no foul play is suspected, however the autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Bonds said the 1971 Marion mobile home was totally destroyed.

The Gold Hill Fire Department also responded.
