Tuesday, May 20, 2008 — Gilbert Coggin, 88, of New London died at 5:58 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2008, in Stanly Regional Medical Center.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Stanly Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Dale Collingwood will officiate and burial will be in New London Cemetery.
Born Sept. 6, 1919, in Davidson County, he was a son of the late Albert McCauley and Mary Jane Taylor Coggin and was educated at New London High School. He was a retired millwright with Alcoa and a member of the 25 Year Club. He ran Coggin Grocery and Service at the corner of 740 and 52 in in New London during the 50s and 60s.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edith Bowers Coggin of the home; two sons, Bill Coggin and wife, Judy Shue Coggin of Martinsville, Va., and Charles Coggin and wife, Pam Lowder Coggin, of New London; two daughters, Rita Efird and husband, Mike, of Salisbury and Joyce Perkins and husband, Greg, of Apex; a sister, Margie Woodle of Norwood; five grandchildren, Todd Coggin, Marie Auten Torrence, Sara Almond, Candace Almond and Adam Efird; and five great-grandchildren. A grandson, Doug Coggin, preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Stanly Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Richfield Baptist Church.
