John Jacob Yelton

John Jacob Yelton, 95, of Gold Hill, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at the NC State Veterans Home in Salisbury.

He was born on January 18, 1928 in Rowan County to Oliver Falls Yelton and Buna Strider Yelton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Yelton.

John was a lifelong farmer. He looked forward to reviewing every seed catalog that arrived because that led to spring when it was time to plant the garden, especially tomatoes. He always planted too much and gave his bounty to Rowan Helping Ministries and other local organizations. His honor system produce stand will be missed.

He loved the community of Gold Hill and was instrumental in the development of the village and park. He also took great pride in maintaining the Gold Hill Cemetery.

John is survived by his sister, Barbara Ridenhour; son, Lamar Yelton (Jan), daughter, Trish Messere (Carl);grandson Josh (Leigh), granddaughter Jenna (Stuart); four great grandchildren, Carson, Parker, Jace, andMason.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Gold Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Beverly Mauldin, officiating.

Burial with military graveside rites will take place in the Gold Hill Cemetery on St. Stephens Church Road following the service.

The family offers heartfelt gratitude and praise to Dad’s caregivers over the last months.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be given to Gold Hill United Methodist Church, Gold Hill, NC.

John was a lifelong member of the church in the village.
