Notes for Alma Patricia “Patsy” Russell
Patricia Russell Yelton

Patricia Russell Yelton of Gold Hill died at home on Sunday, July 25, 2021. Her wish was to pass there in the house she grew up in and later shared with her husband, John. Comforted by her family, friends, and caregivers, her wish was granted.

Patsy was the Gold Hill Postmaster from 1982 until her retirement in 1996. She was a postal clerk prior to 1982 in Gold Hill and Misenheimer. John and Patsy enjoyed traveling to postal conventions across the U.S. for many years, always sending postcards along the way.

She was born in Salisbury on March 17, 1931 to the late Raymond and Beulah Shafer Russell. She always enjoyed her St. Patrick’s Day Birthday celebrations. Patsy had two older brothers, Lamar Shafer Russell and Ernest Raymond Russell, both of whom died in the Pacific in 1944 within a few months of each other during the Second World War. She was sweet and kind and had many lifelong friends. She gained a large family when she married John, one of nine children, and his family became hers. There were cousins on the Shafer-Russell side of her family, just not as many. She thoughtfully maintained and nurtured her friendships throughout her life.

She is survived by her husband of 73 years, John Jacob Yelton. Her children are Ernest Lamar Yelton and spouse, Jan, of Gold Hill; Daughter, Patricia Messere and spouse, Carl, of Cary, NC. She leaves behind a grandson, Josh, and his spouse Leigh, and their two children, Carson and Parker; a granddaughter, Jenna Ridenhour and her spouse, Stuart and their two children, Jace and Mason. She had two step grandchildren in Mark Messere and his spouse, Gina, and their daughter Caleigh; and Michele Legg and her spouse, Bill.

A service will be held at Gold Hill United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 31 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Beverly Maulden officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery on St. Stephens Church Road.

The family would like to thank Kindred at Home and Novant Health Hospice for their care over the last few months. Her special caregivers were there at a moment’s notice and are now honorary members of our family. We are forever grateful for their support and love. As Patsy would say, they are A+.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be given to Gold Hill United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 52, Gold Hill, NC. She was a lifelong member of the church in the village and the organist there for many years.

Powles Staton Funeral Home is assisting the family.
