Sunday, July 13, 2008 — Gertrude Elizabeth Burris Hatley of Locust passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at her home after a lengthy illness. She was born on June 3, 1923, in Stanly County to the late Ellen Lambert Burris and Phylas Lee Burris. She was married in 1943 to Leroy Hatley, who preceded her in death.

An Eastern Star service will begin at 10:45 at Hartsell Funeral Home in MIdland, and the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1p.m. Saturday, July 12, followed by graveside service at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannpolis, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Lou Pfeiffer will officiate.

Mrs. Hatley graduated from Ridgecrest High School and attended business school. Among her fondest memories were the times she and her husband spent traveling and living in Virginia, Mississippi and Colorado.

She retired from Fieldcrest Cannon after 51 years, seeing the name change from Cannon to Fieldcrest and later to Pillowtex. She loved her work and the people she worked for and with. Her greatest love was her family and the flowers where she spent untold hours. She was well-known for her giving spirit and her green thumb.

She was a member of Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir as long as her health permitted. She was also a member of Mizpah Chapter 36 OES, Queen Charlotte Court #2, Order of the Amaranth, Areme Shrine #3, White Shrine of Jerusalem.

She is survived by her daughter, Royce White and husband, Steve, of Locust, and son, Gary Hatley and wife, Linda, of China Grove; brothers, Robert and Charles Burris; grandson, Wesley Bennett and wife Susan, of Locust; granddaughters, Karen Efird and Leesa Osborne; two great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Burris, and two sisters, Bertie Strother and Esther Gordan.

The family wishes to express their thanks to Hospice of Stanly County, especially to Dana Moose and Cathy Hicks, and to her loving caregivers, Michelle Wilson, Ethel Sloop and Doris Çavin.

Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland is serving the family.
