NEW LONDON -- Mary Morton Stoots, 79, of 32108 Austin Road, New London, died Wednesday ( Dec. 10, 2003) at Stanly Manor.

Born Sept. 26, 1924, in Stanly County, Mrs. Stoots was a daughter of the late C.L. and Mary Harwood Morton.

She retired from Stanly Memorial Hospital, where she worked as a licensed practical nurse, and was a member of Kendalls Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hubert J. Burris, and a granddaughter.

Survivors include husband John Kingsley Stoots; daughters Jane Clayton and Brenda Huneycutt, both of Albemarle; brothers C.L. Morton Jr., Chapel Hill, and Jim Morton, Lake Norman; sisters Margaret Hatley and Betty Mabry, both of Albemarle; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Kendalls Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Johnny Lewis and the Rev. Dan Abernathy. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 6 to 8 tonight at Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times, the family will be at the home on Austin Road.
