Notes for Larry Telton Smith
Larry T. Smith

Larry T. Smith of Locust, NC passed away Friday, August 15, 2014 at the age of 69, surrounded by loving family members and friends in his home.

Larry was born November 4, 1944 in Albemarle, NC to the late Ira Telton Smith and the late Ola Mae Smith Hinson. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Janice Maureen Smith; nephew, Todd Brown; and father-in-law, Rayvon Herrin.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, best friend and love of his life, Brenda “Bink” Herrin Smith, of the home; daughters, Leigh Anne Smith Veazey and her husband Gary of Ridgecrest, and Julie Smith; brother, Gareth Smith and wife Judy of Ridgecrest; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Larry was raised in the Ridgecrest area in Stanly County, attended Ridgecrest School and graduated from West Stanly High School.

Larry loved all of his family very much and provided for them any way he could. He served his country in Vietnam, where he was exposed to agent orange, which caused him to suffer from Interstitial Lung Disease, Parkinson’s, Ischemic Heart Disease, Diabetes and Bladder Cancer. Larry also worked as a barber while maintaining his license throughout the years. He was also employed by a trucking company for over 30 years.

Larry was a loving and giving man. Not only towards his family but to anyone who needed help. Throughout his life, he exemplified his Lord and Savior by being a servant to those in need. He would stop and help people change their flat tire, take a meal to someone in need or just strike up a conversation. Larry would give the shirt off his back if you asked. His family and friends were his whole life and he enjoyed good times with everyone. Larry always enjoyed a good joke and laughing. He loved spending time with his family and walking at Ocean Isle Beach. He was the most gracious and loved man and would stop and take the time to talk with anyone he met. Larry especially enjoyed his time with his 5 grandkids. He spent numerous days with his grandson, Samuel Veazey, skipping rocks at the round hole.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 am to 1 pm Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Mission Baptist Church, 12444 Mission Baptist Church Road in Locust. The funeral service will follow at 1 pm in the church sanctuary officiated by Rev. Jeremy Hyde. The burial will be at Bear Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, 22182 Canton Rd. in Albemarle, with military honors conducted by the Stanly County DAV, Chapter 12.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Coggins, Natalie, and Jan at Charlotte Medical Clinic for their outstanding, above and beyond care.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stanly County, 960 N. First St., Albemarle, NC 28001.
