Glenn Allen “Hoppy” Hopkins

Glenn Allen (Hoppy) Hopkins, 74, of Gold Hill, NC passed away on June 2, 2023 at Novant Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, NC, under Hospice Care.

He graduated from East Rowan High School in 1968 and was a four-year member of the Track Team. He was the school’s long-time record holder for the 150 Yard Dash.

Glenn worked 20 plus years in manufactured housing at Carolina Mobile Homes and Silver Eagle Mobile Homes in Rockwell NC, as Foreman in the Saw Shop. He retired from Athena Marble Company of Salisbury, NC.

He was also co-owner with wife Vivian of the Fifth String and Company, a music store catering to the bluegrass and traditional music industry. Together they enjoyed traveling bluegrass festivals throughout the southeast providing an on-site music store booth at the bluegrass festivals for over 20 years.

For the last 18 years, Glenn and his wife Vivian have been proprietors of Montgomery General Store in Historic Gold Hill NC. There they continued their love of bluegrass music, catering to musicians from all over the region who would come every Friday night to play bluegrass and enjoy fellowship. On weekends he was often seen greeting visitors to the historic village and enjoyed talking about the town’s history. Sporting his signature black fedora hat, he delighted in serving up hand-dipped ice-cream and long-neck bottled sodas, often treating the kids to a special kid-sized ice-cream scoop.

Glenn is survived by his wife of 50 years, Vivian Pennington Hopkins, two sons, Matt and Shaun; Brothers, William Ray (Billy) Hopkins, Jr and John Mark Hopkins, Brother-in-Law, Ralph Lee Eudy, numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ray Hopkins, Sr. and Lillie Mae Wagoner Hopkins, sister, Shirley Mae Hopkins Eudy, Paternal Grandparents, John William and Ethel Wiles Hopkins, Maternal Grandparents, Paul Henderson and Katie Ella Mae Parker Wagoner.

Glenn was a member of Gold Hill United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday June 14, 2023, at Gold Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Beverly Maulden officiating. Pastor Maulden will be joined by Rev. Connor Lambert of Troutman NC and Rev. Randy Mauldin of Midland NC. Burial will take place in the Gold Hill Cemetery on St. Stephens Church Road following the service. The family will receive friends from 1:00pm – 1:45pm at the Church prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be given to Gold Hill United Methodist Church, PO Box 52, Gold Hill, NC.
