Bobby Curtis Brown

Bobby Curtis Brown, 73, of Salisbury, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2016 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Margaret (Edwards) Brown, to whom he was married for 52 years.

Bobby was born on June 2, 1943 to the late Clifford Alexander and Edith Hope (Basinger) Brown in Rowan County, NC. He graduated from East Rowan High School. After high school, Bobby proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam war aboard the USS Forrestal CVA59 from 1963-1969.

After his time in the service, Bobby worked as an electrician for Hoechst Celanese in Salisbury. He was a member of Rock Grove United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher, was a member of Open Door Sunday School Class, and was founder and former Scout Master of BSA Troop 324 of Rock Grove UMC. Bobby was also a member of several Classic Car Clubs and of the "The Linking Ring" Magic Club and Christian Magicians. He was a former member Salisbury Moose Lodge and High Rock Boat and Ski Club.

Bobby restored a classic 1940 Ford Truck for which he won many trophies and was the driving force of the Annual Car Shows at Rock Grove UMC. He also enjoyed racing speed boats, playing guitar, singing bluegrass, country and gospel music, fishing, hunting deer and rabbit and performing magic shows. Bobby was always smiling, had a great sense of humor, and loved to tell a joke and do whatever he could to make someone happy, even during the times he was sick. Bobby never met a stranger and was a loving and supportive man who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Bobby is survived by his wife Margaret (Edwards) Brown; three daughters: Christi (Jamie) Brown Hepler, Dana (Keith) Spry Horton, Kim (Clyde) Spry Craig; daughter-in-law, Seleta Kluttz Spry; eight grandchildren: Chris (Kara) Ruhnow, Josh (Kristen) McCarter, Jonas Spry, Brantly (Brittany ) Horton, Keasha S. Snider, Kasee Hepler, Carly (Matt Parris ) Spry, and Bailee Hepler; six great-grandchildren: Kayley, Damian and Tristan Ruhnow, Aleasha and Dakota Gonzalez, and Siddalee Horton; two sisters: Faye B. Bennett and Patsy B. (Lloyd) Story; one brother, Max (Beth) Brown; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by two sons: Phillip Shane Brown and Ricky Haden Spry; and two brothers: Stephen Joe Brown and James Ray (Tuff) Brown.


A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 from 6-8 pm at Powles Staton Funeral Home in Rockwell. Bobby will lie in state from 2:30-3 pm prior to the funeral service which will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 3 pm at Rock Grove United Methodist Church in Salisbury with Rev. Brian Crady, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the NC National Guard.

To honor Bobby's love for many different charities, his family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to a favorite charity of your choosing.
