Ira Eugene "Gene" Abernathy, 76 of Salisbury, NC passed away on Friday, July 27, 2012, at Genesis Health Care of Salisbury. Gene was born January 10, 1936 in Rowan County the son of the late Grier Summerell "Sump" Abernathy, Sr. and Margie Lee Cauble Abernathy.
Gene was educated in the Rowan County Schools, was a member of Christiana Lutheran Church, and the Lutheran Men, and he was a former secretary of his Sunday School Class, a former member of the Church Council and the cemetery committee. He had retired from Clayton Mobile Homes Mfg. Gene's main hobby was cutting trees.
In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by a brother, Grier Summerell "G.S." Abernathy, Jr. on January 7, 2002.
Survivors: his wife, Camille "Cookie" Brown Abernathy, sister, Betty Ann Abernathy Bare of Salisbury, niece, Boni Lowry and husband Scott & their children, Carlee, Michael and Ainslee of Salisbury, brother-in-law, Richard Brown and wife Debbie of Salisbury, step-mother-Bernita Kluttz Sifford Abernathy of Salisbury, Step-brothers, Roy and Dennis Sifford of Salisbury.
Visitation: 6 :00 to 8:00 PM, Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell and the family will be at the residence the remainder of the time.
Funeral Service: 3:00 PM, Monday, July 30, 2012 at Christiana Lutheran Church, Salisbury, conducted by Rev. Carl Haynes, pastor. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorials: Christiana Lutheran Church, 6190 Hwy 52, Salisbury, NC 28146.
