Elaine Kluttz Honbarrier

GRANITE QUARRY - Sarah Elaine Kluttz Honbarrier, daughter of Pearl Lyerly Kluttz and Milas Joseph Kluttz, died peacefully in her sleep on June 18th. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, William Eugene "Gene" Honbarrier, sons Pete Honbarrier and Brian Benfield, sister-in-law Nancy Kluttz, and 5 nieces, and a nephew. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Pearle McCall, brother in law, Fred McCall, Jr.and her brother, Joe Kluttz.

Elaine was born on Nov. 17, 1939 in Abingdon, Va. She received her teaching degree from Catawba College and spent 33 years loving and teaching fourth graders at Granite Quarry Elementary School. In retirement, Elaine continued to care for her community by performing as Jumbo the Clown at parties and nursing homes. As long as her health permitted, Elaine made and delivered "goodie" bags to the sick and homebound. She played her trumpet at weddings, and enjoyed playing during the 7th inning stretch at Legion ball games.

Elaine was a life-long member of Union Lutheran Church where she was the first woman to be elected to the Church Council. She was a circle member, Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, and a member of the choir for 40 years. Granite Quarry Civitans honored Elaine with Citizen of the Year. She received the Outstanding Humanitarian of the year from the District West Civitan International. Elaine was a member of the Faith Civitan Club. Red Hat Society, and Rowan Retired School Personnel were fellowship organizations that Elaine enjoyed.

The family would like to thank Gloria Wilhelm and Dawn Merrell for the unwavering friendship and support that they gave Elaine every day. Thank you to Dr. Gary Fink, her primary physician.

Visitation: A visitation will be at Powles Funeral Home, from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 20.

Service: The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Union Lutheran Church, Salisbury, conducted by Rev. David W. Nuotilla, pastor. The members of the Granite Quarry High School Class of 1958, the Red Hatters Society and the Faith Civitan Club will be seated in a group at the church during the Funeral Service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers,donations may be made to the Organ Fund at Union Lutheran Church, 4770 Bringle Ferry Road, Salisbury, NC.
