Harold Clark Earnhardt, 85, of Rockwell, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2017 at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury, NC.

He was born April 25, 1932 in Gold Hill, NC to the late Samuel Clark and Louise Wagoner Earnhardt.  Harold grew up in Gold Hill, NC and attended Gold Hill Wesleyan Church until adulthood.

Harold was a 1950 graduate of Rockwell High School and a 1954 graduate of Duke University where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration.

Harold was a member of Ursinus United Church of Christ in Rockwell where he was the current Treasurer, a past Sunday School Teacher and past president of the Consistory.

Harold was a Veteran of the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard. He retired as a Brigadier General after 34 1/2 years of service. His last position was the Commander of the Air Guard in Charlotte. He received many decorations and awards including The Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Readiness Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars and the North Carolina Distinguished Service Medal. Harold truly loved flying planes, traveling, and spending time with his buddies from the Guard.

Harold enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends. He also had a passion for Duke University and enjoyed attending football and basketball games with his friends and family. He also was a passionate fan of the various teams that his daughter, Cristy McKinney coached.

Harold and his brothers owned and operated Earnhardt Lumber and Trucking. In his civilian career, he has always been very active in his community. He served as Mayor of the town of Rockwell for 10 years and served on many boards including The American Red Cross, Rowan Helping Ministries, Nazareth Children’s Home, Citizens South Bank, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Foundation,  the Rowan Medical Center, and Rowan Medical Center Foundation, and the Hospice Advisory Committee.

Harold is survived by his son, Mark Earnhardt and wife Karen of Charlotte; two daughters, Cristy McKinney of Gibsonville, Leslie Heidrick and husband Jon of Gold Hill; granddaughter, Jessica Earnhardt; and brother, Bill Earnhardt and wife Sue of Gold Hill and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Brown Earnhardt on June 10, 2012; and brothers, Claude "Pap" Earnhardt and Hayden Earnhardt.

The family will greet friends and relatives on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Powles Staton Funeral Home, Rockwell, NC.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 7, 2017, in the Ursinus United Church of Christ, Rockwell, NC, with Rev. Catherine Costello, and retired Air National Guard chaplain, Phillip Tillman officiating. Burial will follow in the Ursinus United Church of Christ Cemetery with military graveside honors provided by the United States Air Force.

In lieu of flowers memorials in memory of Mr. Earnhardt may be made to the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House c/o Rowan Medical Center Foundation, or to the Helen B. Earnhardt Endowed Scholarship Fund at Catawba College.
