George William “Bill” Brown

George William “Bill” Brown, 92, of Spartanburg, S.C., died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, at Valley Falls Terrace.

Born Feb. 5, 1925, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Ray W. and Mary E. Wagoner Brown and the last surviving member of his immediate family. A graduate of Rockwell High School, Mr. Brown attended Catawba College and was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Brown was the retired owner of Brown Opticians, founding member and a past president of the S.C. Association of Opticians, a past member of the S.C. Board of Examiners in Opticianry and Board member of The Opticians Association of America, The National Academy of Opticians, and honored recipient of the S.C. Optician of the Year Award.

As a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, he served as Deacon, Elder, Sunday School teacher, and choir member, as well as being elected as Elder Emeritus. He was also a member and past president of the Civitan Club of Spartanburg and on behalf of the State of S.C. received the Honored Naval Veteran Award presented by the governor.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Brown; sister, Helen Earnhardt; and son-in-law, Paul Thomas McKown.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Velma Willard Brown; children, Stewart Deane Brown of Spartanburg, S.C., William Grant Brown (Sandra) of Woodruff, S.C., Cynthia Brown Overcash (Edward) of Spartanburg, S.C., and Bunny Brown McKown of Chesnee, S.C.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation and Service: A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 4, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Robert H. Brozina. Visitation will follow the service. Burial, with military rites, will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 4, in Grace Lower Stone Church Cemetery, Rockwell, NC.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg.
