SALISBURY - Mr. Jeems "David" Austin, 87, of Salisbury, died Sunday, May 27, 2012, at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a long illness. He had been seriously ill for a month.

Mr. Austin was born March 17, 1925, in Rowan County, the son of Orin Orestus Austin and Lula Belle Miller Austin.

He worked at Cannon Mills Plant 7 for 36 years. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, where he was active in the Senior Citizens Group and John's Sunday School Class.

He married Maggie Viola (Polly) Starnes Austin on Feb. 23, 1952, and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Austin was preceded in death by three brothers, Harlo, Eugene, and Richard Austin and two sisters, Betty Austin Starnes and Mary Katherine Austin.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Perry Austin; daughter-in-law, Jo Ann; two grandchildren, Nelson and Nikki Austin, all of Rockwell; two brothers, Raymond Lee Austin and John Austin and wife Barbara, all of Salisbury; two sisters, Lola Austin Burris of New London and Faye Austin Yarbrough and husband Joe of Concord, Calif. and a number of nieces and nephews.

Service: The funeral will be Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, conducted by Rev. Gary Coble, Pastor. Mr. Austin will lie in state 30 minutes prior to service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation: Wednesday, May 30, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Memorials: May be made to the Family Life Center at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 9275 Bringle Ferry Road, Salisbury, NC 28146.

Powles Funeral Home of Rockwell is assisting the family of Mr. Austin.
