Maggie "Polly" Starnes Austin

Maggie Viola "Polly" Starnes Austin, 85, of Rockwell passed away on Wednesday July 20, 2016 at Novant Health/ Rowan Regional Medical Center. She was born on August 17, 1930 in Rowan County, a daughter of the late George Martin and Alice Reid Starnes.

Polly was educated in Rowan County Schools and was employed at Cannon Mills and Leisure Lads, previously Erik Anders and retired from Pioneer Manufacturing. She was a life long member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, where she was active in John's Sunday School Class and Member of the Friendship Circle. She was also a member of the Circle of Friends United Methodist Women at Providence United Methodist Church.

Polly was the center of her extended family and was known by both friends and family as a caregiver and always listening and working to help family members who were ill or elderly. She was an avid quilt maker, she always shared her talent with others. She loved family gatherings, particularly at her home place and beneath the shade trees in her backyard, it was the highlight of her summer, along with her garden. She shared her vegetables and her meals with others and was known for her cooking skills. Especially homemade biscuits, chicken and dumplings, and persimmon pudding. The food that was served all around her kitchen table was always special.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Jeems David Austin, whom she married February 23, 1952 and he passed on May 27, 2012. Eight sisters; Pauline Burris; Bernice Morgan; Katie Thompson; Odessa Hill, Ruby Barringer; Ruth Atkinson; Mary Jane Lewis; Margie Lowman; four brothers; Lloyd Starnes; Herman Starnes; Ronald Starnes; C.P. Starnes

Survivors include her son Perry Austin (JoAnn) of Rockwell; two grandchildren; Nelson and Nikki Austin of Rockwell; two brothers; Bill Starnes of Newport News, Va.; Leo Starnes of Salisbury; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Powles Staton Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00pm. The service will be held at 4:00pm Sunday, July 24, 2016 at St. Matthews Church, conducted by Rev. Gary Coble, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service.

Memorials may be made to St. Matthews Lutheran Church Building Improvement Fund or the St. Matthews Lutheran Scholarship Fund.
