J.L. Basinger

RICHFIELD - J.L. Basinger, 82, of Richfield, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at his home.

Born Aug. 9, 1923, in Rowan County, Mr. Basinger was a son of the late John Luther Basinger and Katie Kerr Basinger. Educated at Pond School and Shaver School in Rowan County, Mr. Basinger was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II as a Tank Commander with Company B of General Patton 's 737th Tank Battalion. He received an EMAT Campaign Medal with five Bronze service stars. Mr. Basinger had worked for and retired in 1976 from Alcoa, where he was a crane operator. He was an avid farmer and loved fishing. He was a member of Luther 's Lutheran Church and a former member of the Church Council and Building Committee. He was a member of the Vanhoy-Sells VFW Post 9134 in Rockwell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Barnhardt Basinger, on Sept. 4, 2004; brother Frank Basinger; and sisters Alma Morgan Kepley and Mary Hillard.

Survivors include daughters Kathy B. Varnadore and husband Max of Richfield, Bonnie Basinger of Richfield and Phillis B. McSwain and husband Dan of Albemarle; sister Lillie Mae Mauney of Concord; grandchildren Julie V. Null of Richfield, Megan K. McSwain and Kathleen G. McSwain of Albemarle; great-grandchildren Sarah Null and Jonathan Null of Richfield; and many loving and supporting nieces and nephews.

Service : Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Luther 's Lutheran Church, Richfield, conducted by the Rev. Edward Harper, interim pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the Rowan County Honor Guard.

Visitation : Visitation will be from 1-2:30 today at the church, and the remainder of the time, the family will be at the residence.

Memorials : Memorials may be made to Luther 's Lutheran Church, Cemetery Fund.
