Bryce was born near Faith on May 2, 1924, to the late John R. and Nan Basinger Ludwig. He was a 1941 graduate of Granite Quarry High School. A United States Army veteran, Bryce honorably served during World War II with the Second Armored Division in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He received the EAMET Campaign Medal with five bronze stars and a Victory Medal.

As co-owner with his brother, Dick, Bryce managed and operated Faith Dry Cleaners for 53 years, retiring from the business in 2000.

Bryce served on the Faith Town Board from 1954 until 1958. He was a lifetime member and served as Commander of American Legion Post 327. A member of Faith Jaycees, Bryce was chosen as Faith's "Most Outstanding Young Man of 1957." As a member of the Faith Civitan Club, Bryce was named "Outstanding Citizen of the Year" in 1975. He served for many years with the Faith Volunteer Fire Department and was Fire Chief. Instrumental in initiating the Fourth of July celebrations in Faith, he prepared hundreds of signs and placards for the parades and park celebrations for many years, as well as serving as cashier in the park.

A talented artist, Bryce's hobby of painting led to exhibiting and receiving awards in various art shows. He was a founder of the Rowan Art Guild and was an exhibiting member of the Guild of Charlotte Artists. For many years, he painted and sold portraits, still lifes, landscapes and subjects of human interest.

A lifelong member of Faith Lutheran Church, he sang with the church choir for many years, served on the church council, served as an officer of the Faith Lutheran Brotherhood and was a Sunday School teacher.
