Notes for C. Wayne Mabry
C. Wayne Mabry

Sunday, December 14, 2008 — C. Wayne Mabry, 82, of Albemarle — husband, father and friend — was received into the blessed rest of everlasting peace on December 12, 2008. The son of the late Thomas Allen “Dock” Mabry and Bessie Poplin Mabry, Wayne was born in Stanly County on December 23, 1925.

He was preceded in death by his brother, William Clinton Mabry, and his sister, Alma Mabry Lilly.

Wayne graduated from Norwood High School in 1943 and served with the United States Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946 as a radio/radar operator in the Pacific Theatre.

After returning home from service he graduated from Pfeiffer College in 1948 with an Associate of Arts degree and from Wake Forest College with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1951. Wayne was admitted to practice before the state courts of North Carolina and the Federal courts, and in 2001 he was honored for his 50 years of licensure by the North Carolina State Bar.

After graduating from law school, he embarked on a 37-year career with the Aluminum Company of America — Badin Works, where he served the company as public relations, property and governmental relations manager for their North Carolina operations.

Throughout his career Wayne was an able advocate for the company but he was also mindful of the company’s obligations as a corporate citizen. Under his guidance the Alcoa Foundation consistently contributed to scholarships and charitable organizations across North Carolina.

Wayne served the people of North Carolina on numerous statewide committees, including the North Carolina Board of Water and Air Resources, the North Carolina Agricultural Advisory Committee and the Governor’s Efficiency Study Commission by appointment of Governors Terry Sanford, Jim Holshouser and Jim Hunt. He served on the boards of the Stanly County Hospital and Stanly County Senior Center. Wayne was a member and chair of the Stanly County Library Board of Trustees and chair of the Stanly County Board of Elections.

As an active member of First Baptist Church of Albemarle, Wayne served as a Deacon and Chair of the Board of Deacons, co-chair of the Building Committee, member of the Long Range Planning Committee and Chair of the Pastoral Transition Committee. He was a member of the Saints Bible Class, numerous other church committees, as well as a member of the General Board of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Betty Morton Mabry of Albemarle, and his children: Ellen Mabry Sheppard and husband, David A. Sheppard, of Sunset Beach, North Carolina; Beth Mabry Smith and husband, Steve Smith, of Gold Hill, North Carolina; and Clegg Mabry and wife, June K. Mabry, of Albemarle. Also surviving are his in-laws, Mabel H. Mabry of Lexington, North Carolina; Margaret Morton Hatley and husband, J. T. Hatley, of Albemarle, North Carolina; John Stoots of Albemarle; C. L. Morton and wife, Nell Hatley Morton of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and James R. Morton and wife, Annette M. Morton of Cornelius, North Carolina, as well as a host of nieces and nephews (all of whom were his favorites), cousins and friends.

The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Rufus Lefler and his staff, Dr. Humaira Chaudhary, Dr. Charles Stoddard, Dr. Daniel J. Stackhouse, Dr. Michael Houston, Dr. Joseph P. Simpson, the nurses and staff of Stanly Regional Medical Center, Carolina’s Medical Center — Northeast and Metrolina Kidney Center of Albemarle for their exemplary care and compassion.

The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle from 6 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2008. A celebration of Wayne Mabry’s life will be held at First Baptist Church of Albemarle on Monday, December 15, 2008, at 2 p.m. A private burial will be held at the National Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina at a later date.

Memorials may be made in honor and memory of Wayne Mabry to First Baptist Church, the Friends of the Stanly County Public Library or to a charity of one’s choice, consistent with the admonition that to whom much is given, much is asked.

A special note of love and profound appreciation is extended bo Jonathan “Jay” Davis of Albemarle who gave of himself selflessly to Wayne and his family as their confidante and companion.
