Notes for Betty Morton R.N.
Betty Mabry

Betty Mabry loved traveling and on January 15,2024, while surrounded by family she departed on her most exciting journey to her heavenly home. Born on May 3, 1929, Betty grew up in Stanly County with her sisters Margaret Hatley and Mary Stoots and brothers C.L. Morton and James R. (Jim) Morton all of whom preceded her in their journey home.

Betty graduated from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing and was a surgical nurse. She met the love of her life, Wayne Mabry, and they were married for 55 years before his death in 2008.

Betty and Wayne had three children. She left her nursing career to take on the more difficult job of full time wife and mother. Back in the day when children were allowed to free range entire neighborhoods, Betty belonged to a sophisticated group of neighborhood mothers who had a communication and surveillance system that rivaled high speed internet and the NSA combined. No child's infraction went unobserved or unreported by the mothers.

They cared for and protected all the neighborhood children as their own, which in the long run, produced a large group of quirky yet relatively well adjusted adults.

Betty enjoyed traveling far and wide with her husband and after his death she loved taking road trips with her family. Whether planned or spontaneous, near or far, she always provided some unforgettable and hilarious road trip memories. She never met a stranger and you often had to keep an eye on her to make sure she didn't take off with a stranger.

She was a connoisseur of CookOut milkshakes and a ruthless Scrabble player.

Betty was a life long member of First Baptist Church in Albemarle. She served on various church committees, was a deacon and sang in the choir for many years.

Caregiving was her calling and her gift. She cared for others her entire life with great joy. Even when she required caregiving herself she continued to care for others for as long as she could.

Betty is survived by her three children, Ellen Sheppard, and husband, David of Calabash; Clegg Mabry, and wife June, of Albemarle and Beth Smith and husband Steve of Rockwell. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Annette Morton of Charlotte, Nell Morton of Chapel Hill and many nieces and nephews that brought joy to her life.

After a private family service, Betty will be interred with her husband at the National Cemetery in Salisbury.

Memorials can be made to Trellis Supportive Care hospice and palliative care, Kate B. Reynolds hospice house or First Baptist Church music ministry.
