BURLINGTON - Mr. Arthur Henry Rogers, 92, of 1806 Edgewood Ave., Burlington, NC, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, at 2:45 p.m. at his residence after a brief period of declining health.

A native of Albemarle, NC, he was the husband of Mrs. Trudy Broadwell Rogers who survives of the home and the son of Benjamin Marshall Rogers and Emma Furr Rogers, both deceased.

Mr. Rogers was a member of the First Baptist Church of Burlington. A pioneer in ladies' hosiery manufacturing and yarn development, Mr. Rogers is credited with developing panty hose as a commercial product while at Glen Raven Mills. The original idea he attributed to Allen Gant, Sr., then President of Glen Raven Mills.

Mr. Rogers began his career as a hosiery knitter with Wiscassett Mills in Albemarle, NC. He came to Glen Raven Mills in 1936 to start their hosiery operation in Altamahaw, NC. He eventually became Executive Vice-President in charge of hosiery and yarn texturing operations. He served as a member of Glen Raven Mills Board of Directors.

Also, Mr. Rogers was a founder of Stanly Knitting Mills, a diversified apparel, headwear, and elastic fabric manufacturer headquartered in Oakboro, NC. He served as Chairman of the Board of Stanly from 1946 until 1996. He was Vice Chairman of the Board at his time of death.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Trudy Rogers Evans of Birmingham, Alabama; two sons, Arthur H. Rogers, Jr. and Marshall C. Rogers, both of Albemarle, NC; three brothers, W. Ray Rogers and John P. Rogers, both of Oakboro, and Robert L. Rogers of Statesville; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at the First Baptist Church of Burlington, Friday, October 23, 1998, at 10 a.m. by Dr. Craig McMahan, Pastor of First Baptist Church, and Dr. Dale O. Steele, former Pastor.

The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday. Other times, they will be at the residence.

A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Oakboro Cemetery, Oakboro, NC.
