Helen Roanna Barringer Hammill

MT. PLEASANT - Mrs. Helen Roanna Barringer Hammill, 92, of Barringer Ct., Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Tucker Hospice House.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Mike Obrien. Burial followed at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery. The Hammill family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, July 11, 2011 at Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Mrs. Hammill was born Oct. 6, 1918 in Rowan County daughter of the late Paul Miller Barringer and Mary Alice Harkey Barringer.

She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1935, and attended Pheiffer College for two years and Morgan Business School in Albemarle for two years. She worked as a secretary in the hosiery, knit fabrics and retail jewelry industries. She retired from the office of the original Cabarrus Creamery in Concord.

In 1938, Helen married Fred L. Hammill, Sr. of Badin at St. John's Lutheran Church. They were married for 57½years until his death in 1995. They were members of St. John's Lutheran Church until 1993. Fred grew up a Methodist and they joined Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church where she remained a member until her death.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Barringer and R.J. Barringer and also her pet poodle, Cindi.

Mrs. Hammill is survived by her sons, Larry E. Hammill and companion Lorene Faggart, Fred L. Hammill, Jr. and wife Mary Snider Hammill both of Mt. Pleasant, Ronney Hammill and wife Mary Morgan Hammill of Monroe, sister, Frances Medlin of Concord, grandchildren Lori Hartsell and husband Roger, Beth Davis and husband Todd, Jennifer Nichols and companion Carey, Jeffery Hammill and wife Lisa, great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Kristen, Brandon, Caleb, Joshua, Elizabeth, Rachel, Jessica, Reilly.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County especially Tabitha Hobday for their care during Mrs. Hammill's declining health.
