Fred Leo “Freddy” Hammill, Jr.
Fred Leo “Freddy” Hammill, Jr., 71, of Mt. Pleasant died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.
A celebration of Freddy’s life will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Gold Hill, with the Rev. Darrell Norris and the Rev. Bruce Sheeks officiating. Burial will follow in Brookhill Cemetery in Rockwell. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, at Gordon Funeral Home, 8559 Cook Street, Mt. Pleasant.
Freddy was born in Stanly County on July 3, 1944, to Fred Leo Hammill, Sr., and Helen Barringer Hammill, who predeceased him. A graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Freddy was a self-employed auto-mechanic and auto-diesel technician. When not working under the hood, Freddy enjoyed woodworking, making toys and replicas with the same precision and care he bestowed to motors and engines over the decades.
He also served his community as a member of the Gold Hill and Northeast Cabarrus fire departments and as a First Responder EMT for 30 years. He was of the Lutheran faith and attended St. Stephens.
Freddy is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Snider Hammill of the home; one son, Jeff Hammill and wife, Katherine; one grandchild, Alyssa Hammill; and two brothers, Larry Hammill and companion, Lorene Faggart, and Ronney Hammill and wife, Mary Morgan Hammill and his dog Turbo.
Memorials in remembrance of Freddy may be directed to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, or to St. Stephen's Lutheran Church.
