Monday, July 18, 2011 — Buford Elsworth Lambert, 86, of 36859 Poplin Road, New London, died at 12:52 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2011, in Stanly Regional Medical Center, Albemarle.
His graveside service was at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at Poplins Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Richard Carlisle officiated and full military graveside rites were conducted by the Stanly County DAV Ritual Team.
The family received friends in the Poplins Grove Baptist Church Sanctuary from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the hour of the service.
Born Sept. 17, 1924, in Stanly County, he was the son of the late E. Levi and Evansy Burris Lambert. He was a graduate of Ridgecrest High School and was a retired employee of Service Distributing Co. He was a member of Poplins Grove Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a machine gunner in Company D, 359th regiment, 90th Infantry Division. He was cited April 30, 1945 for “heroic achievement” in the vicinity of Fichtenbach, Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the French Croix de Guerre. He was also a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Laura Scott Lambert of the home; a son, Wayne Lambert (Joyce) of Bald Head Island; two daughters, Wanda Brooks (Butch) of Richfield and Linda Medlin (Kip) of New London; a sister, Pauline Bowers of Albemarle; seven grandchildren, Jenny Carrick, Laura Daugherty, Kim Shaver, Amanda Brooks, Kaleb Medlin, Kacey Medlin and Zack Medlin; and seven great-grandchildren, Tanner, Avery and Hannah Carrick, Cate and Tyler Daugherty, and Luke and Charlie Shaver.
