Howard Overcash

SALISBURY - Walter Howard Overcash, 91, of Salisbury passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Mr. Overcash was born in Rowan County on June 23, 1921 a son of the late Manilus Lee Overcash and Maggie Deal Overcash.

Howard was educated in the Rowan County Schools and retired from Cannon Mills Plant #1 after 49 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Overcash received the American Theater Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star and the Victory Medal Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Ruth Castor Overcash; brother, Clarence Overcash; sisters, Gladys Wensil and Nellie Lee Overcash.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Castor Overcash whom he married on May 18, 1940; daughters, Melody Graham and husband, Barry, of Conover, Marla Young and husband, Keith, of Winston-Salem; sisters, Marguerite Shive of Belmont, Zelia Padgett of Salisbury, Wilma Sells of China Grove and Claudette Brown of Salisbury; grandchildren, Laura Stone and husband, Jason, of Raleigh, Melissa Thomas and husband, Zach, of Winston-Salem and Michael Smith of Winston-Salem.

Services: Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Organ Lutheran Church by Rev. Carlin Ours. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside rites by The North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard and Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the church from 2-3 p.m. before the funeral.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Organ Lutheran Church, Building Fund.
