George David Monroe Peeler
George David Monroe Peeler led an amazing life of 94 years, passing away June 11, 2017. His ashes will eventually rest in the memorial wall at Otis Air Base, Cape Cod along with ashes of his spouse Carolene (Elizabeth Rink) of seven decades who preceded him in death by five years. Two of his siblings, Sarah Honeycutt and John Calvin Peeler, have deceased. He is survived by one brother, Ray Peeler of North Carolina; three children, Donna Siegel and her husband Alan of Easton, MA, Walter Peeler of Tyngsboro, MA, and Brenda Peeler and her husband Todd Shank of St. Croix USVI; three grandchildren, Kimberly Matakanski and her husband Mark, Crystal Siegel, and Joshua Siegel; and two great grandchildren, Jocelyn and Caleb Matakanski.
From a frugal post-depression family upbringing in Rockwell, NC, he went on to earn a college degree from Catawba College where he met Carolene. After serving in WWII, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Applied Physics from Harvard, which led to a varied career in radar and antennae development including lengthy stints at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, DC and at Raytheon in Bedford, MA. He based and grew his family in Lexington, MA, then retired to Chelmsford, MA and later to Norton, MA.
He carried his amazing intellect and achievements very modestly and his skills spanned the spectrum while juggling family and career. As he grew older, he continued to share many new aspects of his life with his children, such as his many interesting experiences in the Navy. Early in life he found common joy with Carolene singing in choirs, which included some stellar performances in Washington and Handel’s “Messiah” at Lexington, MA Town Hall. Later, he became a compassionate and loyal caregiver for his wife.
He was a steady and financially sound father and mentor and demonstrated many practical aspects which were probably honed growing up working in his father’s mechanical garage business. He could transition from radar consulting to acting as a stock broker to scraping and repainting the two story house all in his pace of life with reasonable success in all. He compiled a pop-up skating rink in the back yard for several years running, did all his own vehicle mechanics including engine rebuilds, and managed to share day sailing with his family at local lakes and the ocean. Later hobbies included playing bridge with friends, completing crossword puzzles, sharing books of compiled emails, following the Patriots and the Red Sox, and updating family genealogy history and contacts. His efforts helped refresh extended family ties.
His integrity and strong ethics are core memories our family carries forward. George will be missed.
