Bill Howell Fortune, 77, of Salisbury, died Friday (May 23, 2003) at his residence after a period of declining health.
Born April 8, 1926, in Rowan County, Mr. Fortune was a son of the late Thomas P. and Bessie Troutman Fortune. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II. He was a retired supervisor with the Carolina Beach Water Plant.
He was a member of Old Country Baptist Church, the North Carolina American Legion and VFW Post 3006.
Survivors include wife Doris Stogner Fortune; son Bill Howell Fortune, Jr., Wilmington; stepsons Bill and Terry Livengood, Salisbury; step-daughter Debbie Varner, Salisbury; brothers Frank Fortune, Statesville, and Larry and Gary Fortune, Salisbury; sister Lillian Fortune Hoover, Orangeburg, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great- grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Wade Lomax of Old Country Baptist Church and the Rev. Oscar Hullendar of Whiteville will officiate. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.
Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
