Jesse Edward 'Ed' Galloway

MONROE - Jesse Edward "Ed" Galloway, also known as "Buttermilk," 83, of Monroe, died December 20, 2007, at Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury after several years of declining health.

Mr. Galloway was born July 21, 1924, in Darlington, S.C., a son of the late Toye and Mazallee Galloway. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.

After serving his country, he began his career at Cannon Mills Plant 6 Weave Room in Kannapolis. He also served as a milk hauler for Carnation Milk Co. in Albemarle and started contracting mail service in the early 1960s. In 1967, he created Galloway Trucking and was a U.S. Mail contractor until his retirement. He also served as a president of Star Route Association.

People loved his sense of humor and the way he handled his work ethic. He was also known for his love of gospel music.

Preceding him in death were a daughter, Joyce Ann Galloway; a stepdaughter, Barbara; brothers Bernard Galloway and Jerry Galloway; and a sister, Lavada Louise Doby.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Taylor Galloway of Monroe, who was his friend and companion; children from a previous marriage Eli Edward Galloway, Albemarle, Linda Davis, DeRidder, La., Wanda Galloway Oatman, Kannapolis, Judy Kay Flowe and Debbie Jean Boger, Salisbury, Donnie Ray Galloway, Columbia, N.C., Jeffery Wayne Galloway McCloud, Concord, Randy Joe Galloway, Rockwell, and Janet Leigh Lambert and Michael Anthony Galloway, Salisbury; stepdaughter Bonnie Preslar; brothers Lester Franklin Galloway and Earl Henry Galloway, Richfield, James Allen Galloway, South Carolina, and Darrell Lee Galloway, Rockwell; sisters Ophelia Taylor and Helen Brady, Gold Hill, Gaynell Funderburk, Kannapolis, and Edith Almond, Albemarle; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services were held December 23, 2007, at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe.

Ed's mottoes were: All the self-help on raising children is in the Bible; an idle mind is the Devil's workshop; and if you work hard, you will make it. He tried to live by these things.
